Community Service

It was raining yesterday and my colleagues and I head down to Chai Chee to lend a hand to those less fortunate, the old folks. There were 5 teams in-charge of cleaning their 1-room flats and 6 teams to have a session of arts & crafts at their centre. I was in the cleaning team. Of course, my team got to clean the worst house. Although the experience wasn’t a pleasant one, it has made me ponder on how my old age will be like. I hope not as bad as this. It’s a pity to see these people age without their children by their side. All they have are their friends their age. That few years towards the ending of their lives has got to be with their loved ones, not like this. It’s sad to see the younger generations dumping their parents in old folks and probably visit them like once a year, maybe during festive season. But the situation yesterday was a different one. They lived in a rented 1-room flat and will occasionally go down to the centre at the void deck to mingle with their friends. When they received their goodie bags, they were so happy. That expression was priceless. It can definitely bring tears to my eyes.

I wouldn’t want my parents to be in that state. They brought us into this world with much love. Nothing can ever replace the things that they have done for us. The least we can do is to take care of them and love them till the end of their lives. We’ll grow old one day too and we definitely do not want to end up dying alone in a rented flat.
